The Village of Hawthorn Woods is proud to have earned the Audubon Green Community Award for their ongoing sustainability initiatives from Audubon International, a non-profit environmental organization. Members of Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program are eligible for the award, which recognizes significant environmental achievement and completion of Stage One in route to earning the rigorous designation as a Certified Audubon International Sustainable Community.
“Hawthorn Woods has been actively in pursuit of the coveted Audubon International Sustainable Community designation, as Hawthorn Woods would be the first to receive this distinction in the State of Illinois. We are well on our way to blazing that environmental trail with this latest Green Community Award,” stated Pamela O. Newton, Chief Operating Officer for the Village.
The Village of Hawthorn Woods’ accomplishments include developing a ten-year Sustainability Plan that exemplifies their dedication to improving their community in all aspects. Between prioritizing residents’ needs and the Village’s, they have devised goals and strategies that will help provide their environment, economy, and community with the tools to be healthy and to thrive. Hawthorn Woods consists of 180 acres of natural areas and 23 parks. The opportunities to educate residents and visitors about the outdoors and provide access to recreational activities are endless, including protecting habitats for wildlife in hardwood forests, meadows, prairies, wetlands, and more. Educational signage posted throughout the community’s environmental areas encourage awareness about the natural landscapes, wildlife, stewardship projects, and sustainability. The many accomplishments of the Village of Hawthorn Woods do not go unnoticed, as they received the national award for Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Efforts in any U.S. city by America in Bloom, a non-profit organization which promotes community enhancement programs.
“As the only community in the State of Illinois to receive the Audubon International Green Community Award, the Village of Hawthorn Woods has demonstrated a strong commitment to fulfilling the ideals of sustainability—economic vitality, environmental protection, and social responsibility,” said Christine Kane, Chief Executive Officer of Audubon International. “As an active and vibrant community, Hawthorn Woods has much to celebrate.”
