Village of Hawthorn Woods Earns Sustainable Planning Award from Audubon International

Sustainable Planning Award Recipient

The Village of Hawthorn Woods is proud to have earned the Sustainable Planning Award from Audubon International. This award is an important milestone in Audubon International’s Sustainable Communities Program and recognizes a community’s successful completion of Stage 2: defining and adopting a long-term community vision and choosing sustainability indicators as a mechanism for fostering action and measuring success.

Audubon International is a not-for-profit environmental education organization dedicated to providing people with the education and assistance they need to practice the responsible management of land, water, wildlife, and other natural resources.

Since joining the Sustainable Communities Program last year, Hawthorn Woods has brought together the efforts of residents, local and regional organizations, businesses and community management. These partners have addressed priority projects under 15 focus areas, such as health and transportation. Hawthorn Woods, with help from all the partners, has begun to implement the action items listed in our adopted long-range Sustainability Plan.

Some project areas include:

  • Collaborate with local organizations to restore valuable ecosystems
  • Protect surface and groundwater from runoff and contamination
  • Increase community participation in waste diversion through recycling and composting
  • Develop a plant nursery
  • Decrease greenhouse gas emissions from municipal operations
  • Provide opportunities for environmental education and volunteerism

The Village of Hawthorn Woods will now move forward into the final Stage 3 of the Sustainable Communities Program, during which our community will implement additional projects listed in the action plan and begin tracking the results of our plan.
