In the recent weeks Lake County has experienced a rise in car-related thefts. Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility. The Hawthorn Woods Police Department reminds residents that by simply locking the doors of your vehicle and by taking valuable items with you or hiding them in a locked trunk, you can dramatically reduce the risk of being a crime victim. Park your vehicle in a garage when possible. By removing your vehicle from the street or driveway, you lessen the chances of a thief breaking in to steal a purse, or even the entire vehicle. Do not leave keys in your car. If property is left unlocked, it's more likely to be stolen. Residents who take the time to lock their doors and windows to their homes and cars are less likely to be victimized. Always report suspicious activity and please remember to close garage doors, set alarms, remove valuables from your vehicles, and lock them up.
The Hawthorn Woods Police Department recommends the following 9:00 p.m. routine before going to bed each night:
- Remove valuables from your car
- Lock your car
- Lock your house & windows
- Close & lock your garage
- Turn on exterior lights
