The Village of Hawthorn Wood’s Police Department wants to warn our residents of a new identity theft scam that has occurred in our area. As there has been an increase in applications for unemployment benefits, scammers are using stolen identity information to apply for unemployment benefits. Using your private data the scammers then receive fraudulent debit cards with your name and information on the cards. This is leading some people to receive legitimate debit cards in the mail when they never applied for unemployment benefits. The scammers then redirect these cards for their own personal use. If you receive a debit card and information related to unemployment benefits, and you have not applied for these benefits, HWPD recommends you take the following steps: contact the bank that issued the debit card, and contact your bank to update your security settings. Prompt action is recommended as the criminal already has quite a bit of personal information.
If you are a victim of this new identify theft scam, the fraud can be reported via phone, online or by mail: at https://www2.illinois.gov/ides/Pages/Ui_fraud_reporting_options.aspx
It is important to be vigilant during these times and the Village of Hawthorn Woods encourages everyone to check up on those that are vulnerable to these types of scams.
