Internet Safety
The Internet has provided us with unlimited access to the world of
information, education and entertainment. It is transforming the way we live,
work and learn. Over 68% of the United States population uses the Internet
and that number continues to grow. While the Internet is fundamentally a
great place, there are certain areas and activities of cyberspace that are not
appropriate and/or illegal. We are only beginning to realize the extent of
the complex and increasingly prevalent phenomenon of Internet-based crime.
The benefits of the Internet cannot be denied, but behind the benefits lurk
the dangers that plague our Internet websites, chat rooms and emails.
Predators have learned and are learning to target this vulnerability. We
still have much to learn about the magnitude of the problem, the
characteristics of its victims and perpetrators, its impact on our lives, and
strategies for prevention and intervention. More and more people are engaging
in sensitive transactions online, and too many people are doing so without
adequate computer security to guard against viruses, hackers and other
threats. Updated anti-virus software, spyware protection and a secure
firewall are a must for today’s Internet user.
As we continue to use and educate ourselves through the
Internet, so will criminals desiring to use the Internet as a weapon seeking
our vulnerabilities. There are thousands websites containing tips on Internet
Safety. We have included just a few links here for children and parents.
Please take the time to educate yourself and your children on safe use of the
Internet.
