House Watches

The Hawthorn Woods Police Department will periodically check your house while you are out of town on vacation or simply gone for a few days. We do not conduct long-term watches. You can contact the Police Department for suggestions to improve the security of your home if you are going to be away for an extended period.

When requesting a house watch by e-mail:

  • Download the form by clicking here (Microsoft Word Format).
  • Complete the form in Microsoft Word.
  • E-mail it back to the Police Department at police@hwpd.com

To fax a house watch request to the police department:

  • Download the form by clicking here (Adobe Acrobat Reader Format)
(If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader,
  • Print out the form and fill out with a black or blue pen.
  • Fax it to the police department at (847) 438-5308.

To request a house watch by telephone:

  • Call the police department at (847) 438-9050 Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

You will need to know:

  • Your name, address and home phone number.
  • The date you will be leaving and the date you will be returning.
  • A telephone number where you can be reached or the telephone number of someone who can get in touch with you. This is seldom needed, but good to have in case of an extreme emergency.
  • If there are any key holders, or anyone who will be checking or entering the house while you are gone, you will need their names, addresses, phone numbers and cellular numbers. This includes house cleaners, workmen, etc.
  • If you are going to leave any vehicles in the driveway the entire time you are gone (this does not include people checking your house), please let us know the make, model, year and color of car and the license plate number.
  • We need to know if you have had your deliveries stopped or if someone will be picking them up for you.
  • If there are any lights being left on, we need to know if they are on timers, or on 24 hours, and if they are inside and/or outside the house.
  • Advise us if you have an alarm system and who has the codes to reset or turn off the alarm. This should be someone who lives within 20 minutes driving time of your home. They should have a key and codes.

Please call the Hawthorn Woods Police Department at (847) 438-9050 upon your return so we can cancel the house watch. This is necessary for your safety and our officers.
