Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Police Department located?

The Police Department is located at 2 Lagoon Drive which runs off of Old McHenry Rd. one block east of Quentin Rd.

What are your hours of operation?

The Police Department has 24 hour coverage. However, the facility is open from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm for general business. After hours, the telephones are forwarded to the Lake Zurich 9-1-1 Center who handles all telephone calls as well as communications with our officers for emergency and non-emergency situations. You should dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies. Should you need lobby assistance after hours, there is a telephone in the lobby with a direct line to the communications center who will dispatch an officer to your location.

Does the Department do fingerprinting for identification purposes?

Yes, fingerprinting is done for residents anytime, but it's best to come in Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Fingerprinting for children may be done during the same times. If you would like to have a group of children fingerprinted at the same time, you should make arrangements with our Crime Prevention Officer in advance by calling 438-9050. There is no charge for fingerprinting, but you must bring your fingerprint card with you, have it filled out in black ink, and have a valid picture ID.

When can construction work begin in a residential area?

The hours construction work may be done is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Saturdays from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm except national holidays. No construction is permitted on Sundays.

What can I do about speeding autos in my neighborhood?

Call the Police Department at 438-9050 and explain your situation. Your complaint will be recorded and forwarded to a supervisor. Every attempt will be made to monitor the traffic in your area.

If I accidentally lock my keys in my car, will the police come and open my doors?

The Police Department will respond to all vehicle lock-outs. An officer will attempt to gain entry after a lock-out waiver is signed absolving the officer and department from any liability should damage occur. This may occur if a vehicle has power locks and windows.

What are the curfew hours for my child?

Any minor child under the age of 17 must be at home between the hours of 11:00 pm and 6:00 am, Sunday through Thursday and between 12:00 am and 6:00 am, Friday and Saturday. This means that any child violating the curfew law and is driving a motor vehicle in violation of curfew, does not have a valid drivers license. There are exceptions to this law such as going coming home from work or with an adult. Contact the Hawthorn Woods Police Department if further clarification is needed.

What is the Police Department's wild animal policy?

Wild animals are considered to be indigenous to our area and generally beyond the responsibility of the Village.  However, the Hawthorn Woods Police Department will provide assistance on those occasions when wild animals enter the living space of a residence and pose a threat to persons.

Wild animals in eaves, walls, under decks, in garages and window wells are not considered to be a threat and, according to Village policy, cannot be handled by the police.  When their presence in these areas poses a problem, members of the police department will gladly provide information and suggestions for relocating them but it is the homeowner’s responsibility to deal with the animals or contract with a private pest control company.

Coyotes and Foxes

During the past few months, the police department has received a number of complaints from residents about coyotes and fox in their neighborhoods.  Many wild animals, including the coyote and fox, adapt very well to urbanization and can co-exist with humans.  Some residents have expressed concern about these animals attacking their pets and children.  Attacks by coyotes on humans are extremely rare and attacks on humans by fox are non-existent.  In fact, both animals are very skittish and tend to shy away from direct contact with humans.

The question has also been asked as to why the police department will not capture and remove these animals.  The Hawthorn Woods Police Department does not trap or remove wild animals because it requires licensing and specialized training.  Coyote and fox are protected species and as such, must be trapped by agencies licensed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, trapping is not necessarily a remedy to the situation.

If you observe any wild animals that appear to be sick or present a danger to the public, please call 9-1-1 immediately.  There are agencies that will trap and remove coyotes and fox if they are sick, injured or present a danger to the public, but it is at the property owner’s expense.
