Hawthorn Woods Mayor Mancino Receives Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award

Mayor Joseph Mancino has recently received the 2018 Mayoral Excellence in Environmental Achievement Award from the Midwest Sustainability Group at their annual awards banquet held in Grayslake, Illinois.

The Midwest Sustainability Group is a non-profit organization working toward zero waste/zero hunger, sustainable transportation, open spaces, clean air, and creating healthier communities for the next generation. The Midwest Sustainability Group is working on a forward-thinking interconnected transportation plan for Lake County, where critical environmental resources are protected and quality of life is enhanced. They are a think tank for positive solutions for a better world.

Hawthorn Woods Mayor Joseph Mancino was recognized for his volunteer leadership initiatives and work on environmental efforts, including leading his Village to become a founding member of the Sol Smart alternative energy consortium. Mancino was also recognized for supporting environmental initiatives that conserve water, clean air, and use of sustainable plantings to mitigate flooding on municipal properties. Hawthorn Woods was recently nominated in the top three American cities at the America in Bloom national symposium for its environmental efforts.

Mancino also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Mayor’s Caucus serving the Chicago region, and has brought forward the Greenest Region Compact into the six collar counties. This agreement promotes sustainability in Chicago communities across the region with an emphasis on building strong and vibrant communities.

Mayor Mancino commented, “It is an honor to receive this prestigious award on behalf of my entire community of Hawthorn Woods. This recognition belongs to the residents of town who collectively choose to live in harmony with nature and engage in active environmental stewardship. Because of our collaboration, Hawthorn Woods is an environmental leader among municipalities, and we thank you for this honor.”
